Leaving Port Askaig

Lily MacDougall of Port Askaig, Islay, 94 at the time of this writing (Jan 08) is the oldest living private pupil of Willie Ross. She reports that Willie sailed out from Port Askaig on the paddle steamer “The Pioneer” on what became a very rough crossing. This became the inspiration for the tune, whose lilt exudes a sense of the boat rising and falling in the waves. Thanks to Willie Ross’s granddaughter, Lesley Ross Alexander, for relating this story about her “Papa.”

  • I remember Piper Donald Macphail of the Fremantle Highland Pipe Band always played this lovely 6/8 march as his warm-up tune. I can see him now playing it on the Rockingham foreshore, 1957.

  • I believe that a Scots Guard regiment used it as a warm up tune-a truly beautiful 6/8.

  • The Scots Guards did warm up with this beautiful 6/8.

  • What a magic tune. Discovered it while researching my great grandfather John lockhead who’s regiment used it as their marching out tune
