First published in John MacFadyen’s Book 1 in the early 1970s, this tune has faded somewhat — undeservedly so.

  • Often played far too fast or as a jig. Given its name and significance, it should be played as a retreat march, or even slower.

  • Hi Mike, love this tune. Do you know this history of it. I’ve heard of the battle at Monte Cassino in 1944 but other than that, not really sure. Also just read Evan MacRae’s book. How was he related to D. MacRae?

  • This is my Grandfather’s (Donald Macrae) tune that he composed and played at the battle of Casino.
I wonder where his Gows are now as I have the original chanter.
