In her book “Piping Traditions of Argyll,” Bridget MacKenzie offers some insight into this tune. She says John M. MacKenzie contended that Willie Thomson from Cambpelltown was one of John MacColl’s closest friends and that it was said that Thomson and MacColl “composed Leaving Lunga jointly.” She adds, “Was this a different tune from the one of the same name composed by John Gordon, or did they make it over?” Willie Thomson was a pupil of John MacDonald of Inverness and piper to the MacNeills of Ugadale.
